New Band Puts Fresh Spin on Urban Sound by Don Thrasher
For the past several years, L-Marr the Great has been riding the buzz of underground releases like The Muscle Game Mix Tape Vol. 1. However, his second official solo project, The Moment: Grown Man Music, could considerably raise the local MC's profile.
"It's a retro, neo, hip-hop," L-Marr said. "It definitely has an old-school aesthetic, but it also has a new-school spin to it. It's definitely not - I don't want to say typical hip-hop, like I'm trying to separate myself - but it's not regular.
"I'm 25, I just graduated school," he continued. "I have loans and bills to pay. I deal with adult issues because I'm an adult now and 'The Moment' means the transition from childish things to manly types of things."
L-Marr will celebrate the CD's release at Therapy Cafe at 10 p.m. on Saturday, along with guest DJs Alvin D, Ruckus Robticus, DJ Doc Strange and Etch. While the Wittenberg University graduate is excited to perform at Therapy, he said that hip-hop acts still struggle to book regular gigs.
"Because you don't have an actual band or nobody plays an instrument, it's still kind of viewed as a fringe artistic form." L-Marr said.
To circumvent that problem, the industrious rapper recently put together his own four-piece band, The Wait, which will make its debut at the Therapy Cafe on Saturday.
"I don't want to be the cause of the stagnation of an art form I love. I'm not going to do anything too off-the-wall, but I definitely want to push the boundaries as much as I can," he said.
